“This place is a lot more cramped than Cecily’s cabin,” Adrian complained. “Can’t we just portal there for a couple hours to do this?”

I turned toward Elias, who sat at the small breakfast table with Draven, the surface cluttered with the vampire’s notes. Elias shook his head and sighed. “If we abuse the hole we punched in the school’s wards, they’re more likely to detect it. It needs to be used more like an emergency exit.”

“A back door that only you and Harper can open,” Cal said, leaning over the back of the couch.

Elias winced. “Well, I never said it was perfect.”

“Is that something we can do?” I asked him. “Setting up portal magic that even non-witches can use, I mean.”

“I can’t tell if you’re being optimistic or you’ve learned nothing about your kind these past months.” Draven flashed me a brief grin, exposing one long canine, when I glared at him. “Alchemists don’t share their magic freely with the other races. If such magic exists, or ever existed, it may be buried in the contents of your Codex.”

Which was at the Abbey, safe and sound. At least, I hoped. If no one knew we had it yet, no one would be going after it, right?

I looked again at the mess on the small table. There were more papers stacked neatly on the coffee table, notes and translations and references that Draven had compiled from the Codex. The book itself was deceptively thin, holding much more than we’d imagined when I pulled it practically out of thin air. Like there was some weird spatial magic going on inside its pages that allowed a billion to look like no more than fifty. He’d had to explain it one day when I pestered him about what was taking so long to translate such a small book.

“If you come across something like that, you’d better share the info,” I replied. “It’d be good for a back-up plan if we had something you guys could use, too. The people we’re up against certainly wouldn’t expect it, and the element of surprise could give us an edge we’re in sore need of.”

Elias’ lips twitched in an almost smile, but he didn’t look up from where he had his head bent toward the vampire.

The past couple nights, Draven and Elias had been steadily working through the paper hurricane, trying to make sense of what he’d discovered. Since we didn’t dare bring the Codex with us, Draven guarded his notes well. Despite Elias’ disappointment, he refused to leave any behind when he left, so they only had a few hours each night to work on them.

Cal, Adrian, and I were here to help, but we were pretty much useless when it came to this stuff. I could barely study for my normal classes; asking me to dive into this mess would be inviting a second natural disaster.

“Hey, what’s this?” Elias straightened his spine as his eyes darted over the paper he held. “This mentions Emeris, but the sigil on the page looks similar to a portal spell.
